How Do I Handle Peer Pressure at a Party and Still Get Home Safe?

Substances, Peer Pressure & Safety

If something feels unsafe or urgent

You can always get help, whatever your age, without an account.

Get help now

Decide your limits and your ride home before you arrive. Most party harm happens because there was no plan, not because someone said yes to something.

What's happening

Under pressure, in noise and in the dark, your decision-making narrows. A prepared plan — buddy, code word, charged phone, transport — moves the decision to before the pressure starts.

Usually normal

  • Wanting to go and feeling nervous
  • Being teased for not drinking
  • Changing plans mid-evening

Get checked if

  • Being separated from your friends
  • A drink tasting odd, or sudden dizziness or confusion — tell someone immediately and get to a safe place
  • Being offered a lift by someone who has been drinking
  • Someone pressuring you to go somewhere private

Your next step

Before you leave: agree a buddy, a code word with a caregiver, a fixed pickup time, and enough charge and data to call — then hold the plan even when the night changes.
