Relationships, Safety & Growing Independence

If something feels unsafe or urgent

You can always get help, whatever your age, without an account.

Get help now

Love does not frighten you, isolate you, track you or hurt you. If you are changing your behaviour to avoid someone's reaction, that is a warning sign.

What's happening

Abuse can be emotional, physical, sexual, digital or neglect. It usually escalates slowly and often mixes with real affection, which is why it is so confusing. It is never your fault, and it is not something you can love someone out of.

Usually normal

  • Disagreements, and repairing them afterwards
  • Needing space, and having it respected

Get checked if

  • Being hit, pushed, choked, or having anything thrown at you
  • Being controlled — who you see, what you wear, your phone, your money
  • Being pressured or forced into sexual contact
  • Threats, constant put-downs, or being tracked online
  • Being denied food, shelter, care or schooling at home

Your next step

If you are in immediate danger call 10111. Otherwise tell one trusted adult, and call Childline 116 (free, 24 hours) or the GBV Command Centre 0800 428 428 to talk through your options safely.
