My Friend Says They Want to Die - What Should I Do?
Mental Health & Digital Wellbeing
If something feels unsafe or urgent
You can always get help, whatever your age, without an account.
Get help nowTake your friend seriously, stay with them, and tell a trusted adult — even if you promised not to. Keeping this secret is the one promise you are allowed to break.
What's happening
Friends often tell a friend first. You are not responsible for saving them, and you are not qualified to carry it alone. Your job is to listen without judging and to connect them to an adult or a crisis line.
Usually normal
- Feeling frightened, out of your depth, or angry with them
- Not knowing what words to use — 'Are you thinking about suicide?' is the right question and it does not plant the idea
Get checked if
- They describe a plan or a method
- They have already hurt themselves
- They are alone and you cannot reach them
Your next step
Stay with them or keep them talking, tell a trusted adult today, and call SADAG on 0800 567 567 together — then check in on yourself, because supporting someone is heavy.
