What's happening
Suicidal thoughts are a sign that your pain has become bigger than the coping tools you currently have. They are common, they are treatable, and they pass with support. The thought is not an instruction.
Usually normal
- Wanting the pain to stop — that is different from wanting to die
- Feeling ashamed to say it out loud; almost everyone does
Get checked if
- Having a plan, a method, or a time in mind
- Giving away your things or saying goodbye
- Having already hurt yourself
- Using alcohol or drugs while feeling this way
Your next step
Right now: tell one person who is physically near you, put distance between yourself and anything you could use to hurt yourself, and call 0800 567 567 (SADAG) or 10177 for emergency medical help. Stay with someone until you have spoken to a professional.
