The HPV vaccine protects you against the virus that causes most cervical cancer. It works best before any sexual contact, and catch-up doses are possible if you missed the school round.

What's happening

In South Africa the HPV vaccine is offered through schools to Grade 5 girls from age 9. Other adolescent vaccines include tetanus-diphtheria boosters, and catch-up measles or hepatitis B if you missed childhood doses.

Usually normal

A sore arm, mild fever or tiredness for a day or two after a dose
Feeling faint straight after the injection — sit for 15 minutes
Needing two doses spaced months apart

Get checked if

Difficulty breathing, facial swelling or a widespread rash after a vaccine — emergency care
A high fever that lasts more than 48 hours
